Lighting In The Workplace

Lighting in the workplace is extremely important. If you’re an office worker, you’re probably sick of looking at a display screen all day. But what if looking at that same monitor display screen can have a detrimental effect on your health. Not just the light that is emitting off the monitor, but the lighting in your office are factors as to why you have poor levels of productivity. Natural light is more important than you think and we can help you improve your office lighting.

It is proven that artificial lighting can cause headaches/migraines, eye strain and even some links to Sick Building Syndrome. Whilst having some artificial lighting in the workplace isn’t a bad thing, too much will cause these negative effects. It’s also scientifically proven that some colours of lighting can have an effect on your morale.

Solutions

  • Open you’re Blinds – Let in some of that natural light, as we all know it is a great source of vitamin D, which allows more calcium which then helps bone growth.
  • Blue-Enriched Light – blue enriched light bulbs increases mental acuity, vitality and alertness. This in turn, reduces fatigue making you become more productive.
  • Blue Light Benefits – Despite having its disadvantages a blue light source has some advantages. Blue light can lower the melatonin in your body to keep you more alert in the day time; hence that’s why it is ill-advised for you to use blue light at night.

Lighting for health – Background

The Natural Body Clock

In 2001, American scientist, Brainard, discovered a circadian photo receptor in the retina. It receives a specific quality and quantity of light, which sets the biological clock.

He discovered that light not only provides us with the ability to see, but that light enters the eye via the ‘fourth pathway’, which has a vital non-visual or biological effect on the human body. His studies show that a certain quantity and quality of light stimulates the biological clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates hormone levels, particularly melatonin and cortisone in the body.

How do you feel when the sun is out? Many people agree that sunlight lifts their spirits, brightening up their home and their lives.

Thanks to bio-dynamic light, the same biological effects of natural sunlight can be recreated in interior living and working environments. Bio-dynamic lighting can vary the quality and quantity of artificial light to mimic the rhythm of natural light, offering a people-centred lighting solution that has a positive impact on vision, the biological clock and health and well-being.

How exposure to Blue light affects your brain and body.

By disrupting melatonin, smartphone light ruins sleep schedules and this can lead to all kinds of health problems such as:

  • The disruption to your sleep might leave you distracted and impair your memory.
  • A poor night’s sleep caused by smartphone light can make it harder to learn.
  • People whose melatonin levels are lower than they should be are more prone to depression.
  • There’s a connection between light exposure at night and the disturbed sleep that can come with it. It allegedly links to an increased risk of breast and also prostate cancers.
  • Researchers are investigating whether or not blue light could lead to cataracts.

Although not all is doom and gloom for iPhone users with the new release of the latest update. Help is at hand to reduce the blue light at night.
